Berto’s Penalty Kick Sparks Shadow Victory Spokane Goalkeeper Josh Fouts Makes Eight Saves In Shutout

Dave Berto scored a goal on a penalty kick in the 80th minute to break a scoreless tie and propel the visiting Spokane Shadow to a 2-0 win over the Puget Sound Bigfoot in a USISL Premier League soccer match Friday night.

Berto’s goal, just inside the right post, was his team-high ninth of the season.

Shadow goalkeeper Josh Fouts totaled eight saves for the shutout.

Spokane’s second goal came with 1 minute remaining when Zane Higgins picked up the ball in the Shadow end, dribbled the length of the field, and scored an unassisted goal around the right side of Bigfoot keeper Tom Howze.

Puget Sound outshot the Shadow 14-9 for the game.

The win gives the first-place Shadow a 12-2 mark in the Northwest Division. Spokane is 13-3 overall.

Puget Sound, one of four teams vying for the final three playoff spots, falls to 4-7 in league play. The Orcas are 6-7 overall.

Spokane travels to Bellingham to take on the Orcas in a league contest tonight at 7.

The Shadow’s next home match in a non-league contest against the Vancouver 86ers on July 5.
