Jeter, Yanks Can’t Agree To Terms

Associated Press

American League Rookie of the Year Derek Jeter is taking a wait-and-see approach about stalled negotiations that could result in the New York Yankees renewing the shortstop’s contract.

Negotiations reached an impasse after the Yankees rejected a proposal submitted by Jeter’s agent that sought a $550,000, one-year contract.

“I don’t want to get into the dollar amount,” Jeter said Thursday. “We thought it was a fair offer. They didn’t. They have their reasons.”

New York could renew Jeter’s contract at $150,000 under terms of major league baseball’s collective bargaining agreement, although a higher figure is expected.

The Yankees offered $450,000. Jeter made $120,000 last year, $11,000 over the old minimum.

Brooklyn wants Dodgers back

A commission of prominent New Yorkers has been named to take seriously the possibility that the Dodgers can be brought back to Brooklyn after a 40-year absence.

“The Dodgers belong in Brooklyn just as the Yankees belong in the Bronx and the Mets belong in Queens,” New York Gov. George Pataki said at a Wednesday news conference with Brooklyn borough president Howard Golden and Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro.

Golden has been trying to stir up interest in bringing the Dodgers back to Brooklyn ever since the O’Malley family announced it was for sale.

Line drive fells Honeycutt

Honeycutt was throwing batting practice from behind a protective screen when Eliese Marerro hit a line drive that struck his hand and the right side of his neck. Honeycutt was taken for an MRI, which was negative.

Mets reliever has aneurysm

New York Mets right-hander Derek Wallace is expected to miss most of this season because of an aneurysm in his pitching shoulder, and will undergo surgery next week.

Team physician David Altchek said the problem is similar to the one that afflicted David Cone of the New York Yankees last season.
