Dallas Stars goalie Arturs Irbe made 34 saves but Jorgen Jonsson beat him with 2:31 remaining, denying Latvia a historic victory and salvaging a 1-1 tie for Sweden at the World Hockey Championships in Finland.

Italy plays Canada today for a place in the medal round. Italy needs to win, while Canada can advance with a tie.

Sweden and the United States already have advanced from Pool B, and their game today will be for first place in the group.

A U.S. District Court judge ordered the Houston Oilers and officials for Astrodome USA to try to settle a dispute over a canceled preseason game, discussions that could lead to the team leaving the city.

The Oilers are seeking between $2.5 million and $3 million in damages for a scheduled preseason game in 1995 against the San Diego Chargers at the Astrodome. The contest was canceled when National Football League officials decided the artificial turf was unsuitable.

The team, which plans to move to Nashville, Tenn., still has a year remaining on its lease with the Astrodome.

Corey Welch, who started at quarterback for Missouri in 1988, was shot to death and two men were wounded in a shootout in a shopping center parking lot, according to Kansas City, Kan., police.

Welch, 28, of Kansas City, and the wounded men were found late Thursday. Welch had been shot in the head and died at a hospital.
