Philosophy Instructor Wins Nic Award

Jim Minkler, a philosophy instructor at North Idaho College, was honored Friday by his colleagues as this year’s recipient of the NIC Foundation Faculty Achievement Award.

The award comes with a check for $1,500. Minkler has taught at NIC since 1988.

“We are lucky to have many excellent instructors at the college, but I’ve always considered Jim one of the most outstanding,” said Judy Sylte, a history instructor who nominated Minkler. “I hear so many consistently positive comments about him from students.”

Minkler teaches classes in logic and critical thinking and has taught Japanese language classes. He has been named chair of the social sciences division for the next year.

He has a master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Idaho and is working on his doctorate.

Also recognized for their contributions were Debra Sprague, English instructor; and Tony Stewart, political science instructor. They received $500 checks from the foundation.

Sprague was recognized for having high evaluations from students, for being extremely helpful and for her commitment to lifelong learning.

Stewart was praised for being the impetus behind the Popcorn Forum, a weeklong symposium held for the past 27 years.

Employees of the Year awards were given to support staff members Pam Claflin, administrative secretary; Michele Chesnut, human resources secretary; and Karen Streeter, registrar. Each received $500.
