Avoiding Goats
Winter recreation
The Forest Service is looking at ways to avoid disturbing wintering mountain goats while continuing to provide opportunities for people to enjoy a winter backcountry experience, said Ed Cannady, Sawtooth National Recreation Area backcountry ranger.
“The goats enter the winter season in a maintenance mode. Their metabolisms slow and they move as little as possible to conserve energy,” said Robin Garwood, Forest Service wildlife biologist.
But backcountry adventurers, snowmobilers, alpine and cross country skiers are using the goats’ wintering ground in increasing numbers. With the help of area snowmobile and ski clubs, researchers have mapped areas where goats and backcountry travelers usage overlap. Signs are posted recommending backcountry travelers stay out of the areas.
