No Grudges After Target Practice

Los Angeles Daily News

A day after two Valley natives were used for target practice, neither held any grudges against their opponent.

During the Anaheim Angels’ 5-1 victory over Milwaukee on Friday night, Angels left fielder Garret Anderson of Granada Hills was hit in the left forearm by a Ben McDonald pitch that was aimed for his head in the eighth inning. In the ninth, Angels pitcher Chuck Finley retaliated by hitting Milwaukee’s Jeff Cirillo, a Providence High graduate, in the back.

After being hit, Anderson suffered a bruise in his left forearm and was replaced in the ninth inning. The right fielder was relegated to designated hitting Saturday because his forearm was stiff.

“(Friday) night is done and over with,” Anderson said. “I was stiff and I couldn’t throw the way I wanted to throw. So I shouldn’t be out there (in left field).

“(My forearm) is a little swollen and tight. That’s about it. It will take some time for it to go down.”

When asked about being tagged, Cirillo said, “It’s part of the game and I understand. I knew I was going to get hit. I don’t think it would of showed the kind of person I am if I charged the mound.”
