More Ice Cream Found To Be Contaminated

Compiled From Wire Services

Four more flavors of U.S.-made Thrifty PayLess ice cream have been found contaminated with a potentially dangerous bacteria, raising concerns over the safety of imported food.

A test found that more than 5,500 gallons of the ice cream was contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can infect the brain and cause meningitis, Health and Welfare Ministry officials said Monday.

Two Thrifty PayLess flavors were found contaminated with bacteria in a random test in late October, prompting tests on all imported ice cream.

The six contaminated flavors are Pistachio Nut, Medieval Madness, Chocolate Chip, Cookie and Cream, Strawberry, and Strawberry Cheese, the officials said.

The bacteria was not found in other imported ice cream products, officials said.

The government had ordered tests of imported ice cream in early October after the bacteria was found in some Dreyer’s ice cream bars in Hong Kong.
