Bruins Deal Cougars Another Shutout Loss

College soccer

Washington State University battled Pacific-10 Conference women’s soccer champion UCLA to a scoreless first half before Traci Arkenberg knocked in a pair of second-half goals and the 17th-ranked Bruins rolled to a 4-0 victory at Los Angeles.

WSU’s Cougars (7-11-0, 2-7-0 Pac-10) lost their seventh straight match and their sixth consecutive by way of a shutout. Both streaks are school records.

UCLA (17-2-0, 9-0-0), which clinched its first Pac-10 title and the automatic NCAA Tournament berth last Friday against Washington, has won 10 matches in a row.

In its final match of the season, Pepperdine (7-12-1, 3-4) came from behind to defeat Gonzaga 2-1 in overtime West Conference play at Malibu, Calif.

Freshman midfielder Melissa Rivera took a pass from Jennifer Peterson and kicked a 20-yard bomb past Gonzaga goalkeeper Sara Kinsky to end the match with less than 3 minutes left on the game clock in sudden-death.

Gonzaga (8-12-0, 1-6 WCC) scored first when sophomore midfielder Abby Wais intercepted a clearing pass and sent the ball to freshman teammate Katie Carpenter. Carpenter chipped the ball past Pepperdine goalie Sumon Nicole in the eighth minute.

Forward Sara Overgaag had two goals and an assist as University of Montana (16-5) won the inaugural Big Sky Conference women’s championship with a 4-2 victory over Weber State at Missoula.
