Ccs Men Join Women In Soccer Playoffs

Community Colleges of Spokane advanced to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges men’s soccer quarterfinals with a 3-2 victory over visiting Highline Community College of Tacoma.

Paul Johnson had a goal and an assist as CCS overtook Highline in the final regular-season game of the year to gain the playoff spot.

It marks the third year in a row both the CCS men’s and women’s teams advanced into the playoffs.

Basketball

The Northwest Basketball Camp Thunder, a local touring team, knocked off Southern Illnois, in Carbondale, Ill., 79-67 Monday night.

The Thunder, 3-2 against Division I college teams, were led by Tyrone McDaniel’s 22 points and had four players in double figures.

Softball

Spokane was awarded two national championship tournaments for 1999 by the Amateur Softball Association.

The city will host the Women’s B Fastpitch championships and the Women’s Major Modified tournaments two weekends apart in August.

Two other ASA championship events also will be held in the Northwest that year. The Men’s 45-and-Over Slowpitch tournament will be in Seattle and the Women’s B Slowpitch will be in Portland.

In 1998, Spokane will be the site of the ASA Men’s A Modified and the Men’s B Modified National Invitational tournaments.
