It’s usually much later in the season when Princeton scares or beats a team considered much better.

The Tigers started this season that way Tuesday night with a 62-56 victory over No. 22 Texas in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in East Rutherford, N.J.

Princeton will play North Carolina State, which beat No. 19 Georgia 47-45 in the opener of the doubleheader at Continental Airlines Arena, in tonight’s championship game.

The Wolfpack held on when the Bulldogs missed three shots in the final 13 seconds.

Justin Gainey’s baseline jumper with 2:14 to play prevented North Carolina State from blowing a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter. The NCAA is experimenting with four 10-minute quarters in some games, rather than the usual two 20-minute halves.

Sophomore Lamont Long scored a career-high 31 points and No. 11 New Mexico made an impressive debut with a 98-76 win Tuesday night over Southern Cal at the NABC Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.

No. 24 Temple beat Auburn 68-42 in the first game of the doubleheader that was part of the opening night of college basketball.
