Cc Spokane Men Gain Soccer Semis

Paul Johnson, Lance Peterson and Herbert Barbosa scored in a shootout Sunday to give Community Colleges of Spokane a 3-2 victory over Tacoma CC in the quarterfinals of the NWAACC men’s soccer tournament at Spokane Falls CC.

CC Spokane’s women and men will resume play Thursday in the semifinals at Bothell, Wash. The women will play Lower Columbia CC at 1 p.m. The men will face Edmonds CC at 8 p.m.

Sunday, Johnson scored the game’s first goal in the 22nd minute and put the ball in the lower right-hand corner of the net in the shootout. Peterson hit the upper left corner, and Barbosa, who had tallied Spokane’s other goal, followed with a straight-on shot just under the crossbar.

Tacoma had tied the score in the second half, and each team scored in the first overtime. There was no scoring in the second overtime period.

Spokane outshot Tacoma 15-13. Patrick Luby, in goal for the Sasquatch, had eight saves.

Women’s basketball

Simon Fraser had four players score in double figures as the Clansmen drubbed Eastern Washington 85-49 in an exhibition game at Cheney.

Simon Fraser, shooting 53.3 percent, pulled out to a 39-20 halftime lead, and scored 13 of the first 15 points in the second half.

Nikki Johnson led Simon Fraser with 15 points. Tracy Ford, who scored 10, was the only player in double figures for EWU, which committed 26 turnovers.

Men’s basketball

University of Idaho men’s basketball coach David Farrar has added a second player to his 1998 recruiting class with the signing of Nathaniel J. Watson, a 1994 graduate of Eastglen High School in Edmonton, Alberta.

Watson, who averaged 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists as a high school senior, has spent the last two years on a Mormon church mission.

The left-handed guard was the city of Edmonton’s most valuable player in 1994.

Bowling

Wayne Urlaub of Lynnwood, Wash., defeated Rohn Morton of Vancouver, Wash., in the championship match of the PBA Northwest Region tournament at Matt Surina’s Bowler’s World in Airway Heights.

Urlaub rolled a 279 to claim first money of $1,800. Morton, with a 244, picked up $1,000. Morton had led the field into the stepladder finals by averaging 226.27 pins for 16 games.

Spokane’s top finisher, Dave Barnes, finished ninth, averaging 214.27, to earn $430. Dan Kukuk of Spokane placed 16th and earned $350.
