Lawrence Selects Minnesota

Another Lawrence is headed to the University of Minnesota.

Sandpoint High wrestler Jared Lawrence, undefeated through three years, signed a letter of intent during the recent early signing period.

He’ll join his brother, Brett, a redshirt freshman. Former Sandpoint standout Zac Taylor is a senior at the school.

Lawrence initially planned to wait until after the season to sign. He visited Minnesota and Nebraska and was considering trips to Lehigh and Michigan State.

He decided to sign early for two reasons. First, he was leaning heavily toward Minnesota because of the natural connection. Second, he didn’t want to jeopardize a possible scholarship if he were to injure himself this season.

Lawrence said he also chose a half scholarship over a full offer from Nebraska.

Lawrence, 93-0, has won state titles at 103 pounds (30-0) as a freshman, at 112 (31-0) as a sophomore and 119 (32-0) last year.

He’ll be up two weights this season at 130, but could bounce back and forth from 125 to 135 for tournaments. Practice begins Dec. 1.

Central Valley High School senior Rikki Jackson, a 5-foot-9 guard, has signed a letter of intent to play for the women’s basketball team at the University of Idaho.

She joins recruits Darci Pemberton, a 6-foot forward from Everett, Wash.; 6-3 center Julie Wynstra of Lynden, Wash.; 5-11 guard Jennae Krell of Bothell, Wash.; and 5-10 guard Meg LeBlanc of Corvallis, Ore.

Jackson was given honorable mention as a junior on Street and Smith’s All-America team. As a junior she averaged 14.7 points, 11.2 assists and 4.2 rebounds while helping CV reach the State AAA title game.

Guard Tyrone McDaniel scored 19 points and took in six steals Tuesday to boost the Spokane-based NBC Thunder to a 69-66 victory over Boise State.

A half-court attempt by Boise State’s Justin Lyons bounced off the rim as the game ended.

The Thunder pulled to a 37-25 lead at the half on 16 points by forward Emile Shephard, including 9 for 9 from the free-throw line

The Thunder led 56-36 with 11:20 left before forward Roberto Bergersen and guard Gerry Washington brought the Broncos to within three with 4.4 seconds remaining. McDaniel missed a free-throw attempt, giving Boise State the final shot at the buzzer.
