DECISIONS

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Tuesday that motorists can install on/off switches on their vehicles’ air bags if those bags pose a threat of death or injury to the driver or a front-seat passenger. The ruling goes into effect Jan. 18.

IN PASSING

Dame Jean Conan Doyle, the last surviving child of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, died Tuesday. She was 84.

George O. Petrie, a veteran character actor whose career spanned Broadway, radio, films and a half-century on television, died Sunday. He was 85.

Saul Chaplin, a three-time Academy Award winner who shared Oscars for scoring the musicals “An American in Paris,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “West Side Story,” died Saturday. He was 85.
