Ewu Star Co-Mvp In Big Sky Exner Shares With Treglown; Botha, Robison On 2nd Team

Eastern Washington University volleyball star Kim Exner has been named co-most valuable player after leading the Eagles to a share of the Big Sky Conference championship.

Exner, a junior middle blocker from Vernon, B.C., shares MVP honors with Northern Arizona’s Jenny Treglown. Two of Exner’s teammates, seniors Lora Botha and Lynn Robison, were second-team selections in balloting by the conference’s head coaches.

Exner, Botha, Robison and their teammates return to action Friday when EWU faces the NAU-Montana winner at 5 p.m. in the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference Tournament at Sacramento, Calif.

Already among the most statistically prominent players in school history, Exner leads the Big Sky in kills (4.58) and blocks per game (1.48), and she’s hitting .288. Recently, she became Eastern’s all-time leader in total kills with 1,287.

Exner earned first-team recognition for the second straight season. She and Juli Argotow, who received the honor in 1989, when the Eagles won the Big Sky regular season and tournament titles, are the only volleyball MVPs in EWU history.

“I think it is an outstanding tribute to Kim as a junior to be named the MVP,” said Eastern coach Pamela Parks. “She has always been a talented attacker, but she has worked very hard in other aspects of her game, particularly in the area of blocking and team leadership.”

Kim has been a major cog in the wheel of the Eagles machine in its progress over the last three years.”

Botha, a Green River Community College transfer from Buckley, Wash., averages 2.88 kills and 1.34 blocks per game while attacking at a 269 clip. Her blocks per game average ranks third in the Big Sky.

Robison, an outside hitter from Ranier, Ore., averaging 4.24 digs per game to rank second in the conference. She averages a school-record 3.43 for her career, and her total of 1,134 digs is the sixth-best in Big Sky history.
