Lsu Lives Its Impossible Dream

No more jokes. LSU stopped all the wisecracks by doing what coach Gerry DiNardo had spent the week saying was impossible beating the defending national champions.

And the Tigers did it by doing the impossible - running against Florida and shutting down the Fun & Gun offense.

“We were sick and tired about hearing that we had no chance to win this game,” running back Kevin Faulk said.

In an upset unlike any before in LSU’s 104-year football history, the Tigers (5-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) shocked top-ranked Florida 28-21 at Baton Rouge, La.

LSU had never before beaten a No. 1 team and had never beaten Steve Spurrier, either as a player or a coach.

Run, run, runaway

Earl Campbell couldn’t do it. Neither could Greg Pruitt, Billy Sims or any of the other great running backs who played in 91 Texas-Oklahoma games.

Never before had anyone on either team run as wild as Ricky Williams and De’Mond Parker did in Saturday’s renewal of the rivalry, won 27-24 by the Longhorns.

Williams carried a Texas-record 40 times, a dozen more than his previous best, and gained 223 yards - the fourth-most in Texas history and 79 more than any Longhorn ever had against the Sooners.

While Williams also broke Pruitt’s Texas-Oklahoma series record of 216 yards set in 1971, he’s not No. 1 on the list. Parker is.

Parker had 31 carries for 291 yards and three touchdowns, including fourth-quarter scores of 48 and 66 yards that kept OU in the game. His total was the second-most in school history, three yards behind Pruitt’s best.

Hawaii topples Fresno State

Freshman Charles Tharp rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns late Saturday as Hawaii (3-3, 1-3 Western Athletic Conference) played a ball-control game to defeat Fresno State (2-4, 1-1) 28-16.
