Course Will Introduce Women To Hands-On Jobs

Spokane Valley women looking to break into non-traditional careers can sign up for a free class that starts next week.

A four-week class, called Paths to Technology for Women, will be held at the Barker Community Learning Center, 1512 N. Barker Road, starting Oct. 21. The class meets each Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Nov. 18.

The class, offered through the Community Colleges of Spokane, is open to any woman, with an enrollment cap of 25. Registration is open up to the first day of class.

Participants can get reimbursed for gas and can take advantage of free child care and weekly counseling sessions.

“It’s a very beginning who-am-I? how-do-I-do-it? get-started class,” said Suzanne Bettinger, who coordinates the class for the community colleges.

Participants will not get job training, but rather will be introduced to the concept of hands-on technical jobs, such as mechanic, electrician and machinist. They will be introduced to apprencticeships, and learn about other ways to gain technical skills. Participants will also get information about colleges and vocational schools offering training.
