Calculating Child Rapist Sentenced To 22-1/2 Years Judge Orders Twice The Standard Maximum Sentence After Reading Man’s Detailed Journal

A Stevens County child rapist got twice the standard maximum sentence Wednesday after a judge read a journal in which the man described how he progressively taught a 14-year-old boy new sex acts.

David M. Greene, 55, was sentenced to 22-1/2 years in prison for his guilty plea to one count of second-degree child rape and two counts of third-degree child rape. State guidelines called for a range of eight to 11 years.

It was the second time Greene has been sent to prison for sexually abusing a child.

He was convicted in June 1974 of indecent liberties with a child younger than 15 and was released from parole supervision in June 1979.

In the new case, Superior Court Judge Larry Kristianson said extra prison time was warranted because Greene patiently groomed his victim for sex and repeatedly raped the boy in the course of a year or more. Greene deliberately befriended the boy and his family and then abused their trust, the judge said.

Greene and his victim were neighbors in the Jump Off Joe Lake area about 10 miles south of Chewelah.

Prosecutor Jerry Wetle agreed to drop 13 counts of second-degree child rape in exchange for Greene’s guilty plea.

Kristianson said Greene’s journal detailed 31 instances of oral and anal intercourse over seven months, from August 1995 to March 1996.

The diary described Greene’s “obsession with his victim, his hope to spend his entire life with the boy, his anger at others for interfering in their relationship,” the judge said. “It also details the defendant’s high degree of planning to try to get the boy alone and to progressively ‘teach’ him sexual acts.”

Kristianson said Greene befriended the boy by taking him and his friends on excursions that included fishing and target shooting. He also worked with the boy on winter firewood projects.

The boy’s family became concerned in late 1995 and restricted Greene’s contact with the boy, but the abuse resumed in January 1996, Kristianson said.

Authorities didn’t find out until December 1996. Greene revealed the abuse while seeking treatment at the Stevens County Mental Health Center for stab wounds and a bipolar mental condition. He was arrested early this year after being released from Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake.

Court documents say the victim, now 16, was reluctant to talk to investigators at first. Eventually, though, the boy reported abuse from 1994 through November 1996.

The boy told a sheriff’s deputy that Greene kept a gun under his pillow and threatened to beat him up.

Kristianson said Greene, who declined to speak during his sentencing, has shown no remorse. In fact, the judge said, Greene complained to a presentence investigator that the only reason he was caught was because he let his guard down.
