Balanced Bears Roll

GSL

Central Valley is ready for the playoffs.

The Bears tuned up for the postseason by turning its fine-tuned machine lose on Valley rival University Friday night at U-Hi, racing to a 56-12 win.

They did so by revving up the passing game to go with their powerful running attack.

Chad Adamson hit his first four passes and his last six, going 10 of 12 for 192 yards.

“We need to (pass), it’s something we’re going to have to have,” Central Valley coach Rick Giampietri said. “We’re going to have to be clicking on all cylinders.”

The win clinched a playoff spot for the undefeated Bears, who can consider the postseason under way since their last two Greater Spokane League opponents are Gonzaga Prep and Lewis and Clark, teams with one league loss each.

University coach Mike Ganey thinks the Bears are ready.

“They just had an excellent game plan and played very well. They were flawless,” he said. “They were just more physical up front than we were. That’s the best I’ve seen them play this year.”

The Bears did it with a well-balanced offense that rolled up 429 yards and a defense that comonly allowed only three first downs and 56 yards. The only flaw was on special teams, with University’s Nick Mattioda returning kickoffs 94 and 92 yards for touchdowns in the second quarter.

In other Greater Spokane League games, Prep and LC stayed on CV’s heels by beating Rogers 35-14 and Shadle Park 32-10, respectively, in a double-header at Albi Stadium.

Ferris rallied to defeat Eisenhower 21-20 in a non-league game in Yakima.

Name it and the second-ranked Bears (7-0 overall, 6-0 GSL) did it against the Titans (3-4, 3-3).

The first drive was 92 yards, started by 17- and 12-yard runs by Tyree Clowe but the capper was a 16-yard pass from Adamson to Nate McFarlane.

The second drive was a short field, with the Bears covering 60 yards in three plays, finished by Clowe’s 2-yard run. The big play was a 46-yard deep post pass from Adamson to Todd Millar.

Next came an 18-yard interception return by Patrick Libey for a touchdown and it was 21-0 after one quarter.

The fifth touchdown was Clowe’s third, a 10-yard sweep around left end one play after McFarlane’s 62-yard punt return.

The Saxons (2-5) rallied behind quarterback Adam Oakley to edge the Cadets (0-7) of the Big Nine.

After taking a 7-0 lead, Ferris allowed Ike to score three straight touchdowns, but the PAT was missed on the final TD.

Oakley hit Garth Hamilton for 32 yards to set up Nick Bozo’s 5-yard touchdown run with 4:36 left and then connected with Jonathan Parker for a 32-yarder to tie the game before John Slack kicked the winning PAT.
