G-Prep, CV Tie For 5th, Play For Final Soccer Spot

Shadle Park’s girls soccer season ended Friday, but the Highlanders extended Gonzaga Prep’s schedule.

Shadle (6-10, 3-6) defeated visiting Central Valley 2-0, creating a tie between the Bears (7-7, 4-5) and G-Prep (10-6, 4-5) for fifth place.

The Greater Spokane League’s top five teams qualify for the District 8-4A Tournament, so Prep and CV will break the tie at 3 p.m. Monday at a neutral site to be determined.

Jaime Winchell had a hand in both Shadle goals. She scored at 65 minutes after beating three players from 35 yards, then set up Jamie Vanos’ header goal at 72:00.

G-Prep lost to league-champion Mead 2-0 at G-Prep. Allie Bailey stopped all seven Bullpups shots. Natalie Kehl of the Panthers (16-0, 9-0) scored her 14th goal overall and sixth in league, and Danielle Zelinski added her third GSL goal.

University (11-3, 8-1) finished in second place with a 6-0 win over host North Central (2-12, 1-8) at the North Complex. Megan Black scored league goals Nos. 4 and 5.

Third-place Ferris (11-5, 7-2) won its fourth straight as Megan Cummings’ sixth and seventh league goals came quickly and guided a 5-0 win over visiting Rogers (2-14, 0-9).

Lewis and Clark (8-6, 6-3) placed fourth, winning 4-2 at Mt. Spokane (3-11, 3-6) when a hand-ball call on goalkeeper Elina Gee led to three unanswered goals. Mt. Spokane played without five starters.

The district tournament begins Thursday with a pair of 3 p.m. loser-out matches. No. 5 travels to U-Hi and LC visits Ferris.

Thursday’s winners meet Nov. 3 at the higher seed for a state-playoff berth. Mead will then host a seeding match Nov. 5 at Mead High.

Ferris and Mead capped their successful seasons with wins and will rest from competition for one week.

Julie Weatherred’s nine digs and five kills helped league-champion Ferris (17-1) to a 15-6, 15-7, 15-5 win over visiting Mt. Spokane (0-18).

Kortney Stewart’s nine kills, four digs and three aces guided runner-up Mead (16-2) to a 15-7, 15-7, 15-13 decision over visiting NC (2-16).

Ferris and Mead have opening-round byes at the Cavanaughs Hotels District 8-4A Tournament, which opens Thursday at Mt. Spokane. Mead will meet the Rogers/Shadle winner at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by Ferris against the LC/G-Prep winner.

Ferris’ Missy Blackshire missed her second consecutive match. Blackshire has a shoulder strain but expects to return to practice Monday.
