Woman Named To High Iranian Job

Compiled From Wire Services

A woman has been named to a top post in Iran’s Culture Ministry, making her the second woman to receive a high government posting since the country’s 1979 Islamic revolution, an Iranian news report said Sunday.

Aazam Nouri was named deputy culture minister for legal and parliamentary affairs, the official Islamic Republic News Agency said. President Mohammad Khatami, who took office on Aug. 4, earlier selected a woman, U.S.-educated Massoumeh Ebtekar, as a vice president.

Khatami won office by a landslide and was seen by his supporters as likely to ease nearly two decades of social restrictions imposed by Iran’s ruling clerics.
