Animal rights

A coalition of seven animal protection groups is launching a petition campaign for a California initiative to outlaw certain animal traps and poisons.

The measure would ban the use of sodium cyanide and sodium fluroacetate, or Compound 1080 poisons, and steel-jawed leghold traps.

ProPAW is a coalition of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Animal Protection Institute, The Ark Trust, the Doris Day Animal League, The Fund for Animals, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and The Humane Society of the United States, the organization that bankrolled the failed 1996 attempt to restrict bear hunting in Idaho.
