WEST

Baylor 37, Fresno State 35: At Fresno, Calif., Jerod Douglas rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bears past the Bulldogs.

Anthony Overstreet, who added 97 yards in 10 carries and scored twice, gave Baylor a 37-28 lead with his second TD of the game, an 18-yard run with 6:27 to play.

Fresno State closed to 37-35 on Bill Volek’s third touchdown pass, a 7-yarder to Vince Branstetter, but Baylor then ran out the clock.

MIDWEST

Toledo 36, Purdue 22: At Toledo, Ohio, Dwayne Harris ran for 159 yards and a touchdown, Chris Wallace passed for two scores and the Rockets ran off 27 consecutive points to ruin the debut of Boilermakers coach Joe Tiller.

Records: Toledo (1-0); Purdue (0-1).

Southern Mississippi 24, Illinois 7: At Champaign, Ill., Jamaal Alexander intercepted two passes, returning one 21 yards for a touchdown, and the Golden Eagles defeated the Illini in Ron Turner’s coaching debut for Illinois.

Missouri 44, Eastern Michigan 24: At Columbia, Mo., Devin West and Brock Olivo each scored two touchdowns and the Tigers ran for 382 yards to stop the Eagles.

Kansas 17, TCU 10: At Lawrence, Kan., Zac Wegner hit wide-open Termaine Fulton for a 60-yard touchdown with 6:15 left, lifting the Jayhawks to a mistake-filled victory over the Horned Frogs.

TCU lost two of three fumbles and Kansas lost four of five.

Bowling Green 28, Miami, Ohio 21: At Bowling Green, Ohio, Bob Niemet ran for two touchdowns and the Falcons’ defense throttled the RedHawks in the second half of a Mid-American Conference opener.

Records: Bowling Green (1-1, 1-0 MAC); Miami (1-1, 0-1).

Ball St. 24, James Madison 6: At Muncie, Ind., LeAndre Moore went 85 yards for the longest touchdown run in school history and scored again on a 1-yard run as the Cardinals defeated Division I-AA Dukes.

Records: Ball State (1-1); James Madison (0-1).

SOUTHWEST

Oklahoma 36, Syracuse 34: At Norman, Okla., the Sooners used two blocked punts by Travian Smith to set up or score touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner, and De’Mond Parker ran for 239 yards on 31 carries.

Oklahoma ended an eight-game home losing streak that had lasted nearly two years.

Oklahoma also blocked a 44-yard field goal try by Nathan Trout on the game’s final play.

Syracuse’s Donovan McNabb threw for 223 yards and ran for another 61.

Air Force 41, Rice 12: At Houston, Blane Morgan passed for two touchdowns and ran for two as the Falcons defeated the Owls for Fisher DeBerry’s 100th coaching victory.

Arkansas 28, NE Louisiana 16: At Fayetteville, Ark., Chrys Chukwuma scored his third touchdown early in the second half and linebacker Harry Wilson followed moments later with a 52-yard interception return for a TD to lead the Razorbacks past the Indians.

Records: Arkansas (1-0); NE Louisiana (1-1).

Texas A&M 59, Sam Houston State 6: At College Station, Texas, Sirr Parker scored three touchdowns and Dante Hall had two more and 169 yards rushing for the Aggies.

Mississippi St. 35, Kentucky 27: At Starkville, Miss., Kentucky sophomore quarterback Tim Couch tied a Southeastern Conference record with 39 completions, but the Bulldogs’ pressure defense recorded five sacks.

Couch completed 39 of 61 passes, both Kentucky records, for 349 yards and four touchdowns. It was his second 300-yard game in as many tries as Kentucky’s starter.

Utah 27, Louisville 21: At Louisville, Ky., Juan Johnson ran for two touchdowns and the Utes held the Cardinals to 15 rushing yards.

Ohio 21, Maryland 14: At College Park, Md., quarterback Kareem Wilson ran for two touchdowns and the Bearcats overcame a 14-point deficit to shock the Terrapins, ruining the head coaching debut of Ron Vanderlinden.

Oklahoma St. 31, SW Louisiana 7: At Lafayette, La., Jamaal Fobbs set an Oklahoma State freshman rushing record with 217 yards, scoring once and setting up a touchdown in the Cowboys’ victory over the Cajuns.

Tulane 31, Cincinnati 17: At New Orleans, Tommy Bowden made a successful coaching debut as the Green Wave upset the Bearcats after trailing 10-0 in the Louisiana Superdome.

Tulane quarterback Shaun King, a junior, completed 21 of 34 passes for 265 yards and four touchdowns.

Records: Tulane (1-0, 1-0 Conference USA); Cincinnati (1-1, 0-1).

South Carolina 33, Central Florida 31: At Columbia, S.C., Anthony Wright threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score, helping the Gamecocks hold off the Golden Knights.

Memphis 28, Alabama-Birmingham 7: At Memphis, Tenn., Bernard Oden threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Tigers won despite allowing the Blazers their first points in two games.

Mississippi 23, SMU 15: At Oxford, Miss., freshman Duece McAllister rushed for 92 yards and kept alive a late touchdown drive with a second effort as the Rebels defeated the Mustangs.

N.C. State 45, Duke 14: At Durham, N.C., the Wolfpack followed their upset of Syracuse by rolling over the Blue Devils, getting another outstanding effort from quarterback Jamie Barnette (15 of 19 for 224 yards) to go with a ground attack that netted 297 yards.

Records: N.C. St. (2-0); Duke (0-1).

EAST

West Virginia 24, East Carolina 17: At Morgantown, W.Va., Amos Zereoue rushed for a career-high 199 yards and two touchdowns, and Nate Terry scored on a 100-yard kickoff return to lead the Mountaineers.

Records: West Virginia (2-0); East Carolina (0-1).

Marshall 35, Army 25: At West Point, N.Y., Randy Moss turned two short receptions into spectacular long touchdowns and the Thundering Herd capitalized on three Army turnovers for its first victory since moving up from Division I-A.

Moss made five catches for 186 yards, including TD catches covering 90 and 79 yards.

It was Army’s 1,000th game.

Temple 28, Boston College 21: At Philadelphia, Stacey Mack’s 26-yard touchdown run with 1:25 left in the game provided the Owls with their second Big East victory in 40 games.

South Florida 80, Kentucky Wesleyan 3: At Tampa, Fla., South Florida (37,000 students) shed its label as the nation’s largest university without a football program, as the Bulls made a successful Division I-AA debut.

Fairfield 34, LaSalle 10: La Salle played its first game since 1941 when the school dropped football as enrollment sagged during World War II.

Oberlin 18, Thiel 17: Oberlin broke a 40-game losing streak that dated to Nov. 7, 1992.
