New Animal Clinic Offers Wide Range Of Services

Sam Francis Staff writer

Otis Orchards has a new spot for under-the-weather pets.

Harvard Gentle Care animal hospital, 4904 N. Harvard Road, opened for business early this summer. It’s the second animal clinic in Otis Orchards. Dr. Julie Jeckle Clark, head of the hospital, has worked as a veterinarian in Las Vegas for the past three years. She was recently awarded a three-year membership in the American Animal Hospital Association.

It’s not just a place to bring sick pets. The 3,500-square foot business also offers grooming, boarding, pet food and supplies.

“Every animal is brought outside at least three times a day, and the cats get played with a lot, because we’re not very busy,” said Clark. She even plays a special video of squirming squirrels and hopping bunnies to keep cats occupied.

Gizmo, a five-foot sculpture of a striped, orange tabby, is perched on the roof of the new business. It’s a memorial to Clark’s family cat.

He’s the patron saint of the clinic, said Clark.

Retailer right on schedule

Home Depot is right on track to open its first Spokane store in mid October.

The home improvement retailer opens at 5101 E. Sprague on October 16.

The 108,000-square foot store is the size of three football fields, said Tom Raynor, store manager. Construction crews are still finishing minor work inside the building.

So far, Raynor has hired 110 people for the new store. About 40 of those are relocations from southern states. Raynor is still looking for 20 part-time employees.

Atlanta-based Home Depot is the country’s largest home improvement retailer.

Dance academy expands staff

Gearing up for its fourth season in the Valley, the Academy of Dance has expanded its staff and repertoire.

Heidi Holmquist, previously the director of Washington State University’s award-winning dance team, starts as a jazz instructor this month.

Because of the popular demand for traditional Irish step-dancing, displayed in the worldwide touring production of “Riverdance,” Academy of Dance director Janet Wilder also recently added that component.

The 2,800-square foot Valley dance school has grown consistently since opening four years ago, said Wilder.

Wilder is also seeking advanced ballet dancers for the Valley’s non-profit civic dance company, Dance Theatre Northwest.

Auditions will be held Sept. 27 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Academy of Dance.

The company’s fourth season includes “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” on Oct. 25 and “The Toy Shelf” on Dec. 14. Performances are staged at the Metropolitan Performing Arts Center.

Wilder is the resident choreographer for Spokane’s Uptown Opera company. In 1996, she was selected by the United Kingdom’s Royal Academy of Dance as an international dance delegate to the People’s Republic of China.
