Porter’s Final 69 Pays Off

Bill Porter of Quincy, Wash. carded a 3-under-par 69 Wednesday to win the Northwest Open at Bend, Ore., by one stroke.

Porter finished with a three-day total of 8-under-par 208 on the 6,895-yard course at Awbrey Glen Golf Club. He won $8,000.

Todd Erwin of Des Moines, Wash., who had a two-stroke lead heading into the final round, shot an even-par 72 and finished second at 209. Jeff Coston of Blaine, Wash., birdied the final hole for a 70 and finished third at 210.

Michael Rorholm of Spokane finished with a 69 for a total of 212. He placed sixth and earned $1,850.

Benefit softball

Three former pro sports stars will be in Coeur d’Alene on Sunday to play in a softball exhibition benefiting Big Brothers/Big Sisters of North Idaho.

Former New York Yankees pitcher Goose Gossage, ex-Oakland Raiders linebacker Rod Martin and former Los Angeles Lakers guard Michael Cooper will team with North Idaho College’s baseball team in the benefit game.

The game will be played at Memorial Field at 2 p.m.

Weight-lifting

Idaho Iron in Post Falls will host the USPF National Deadlift Championships and Great Northern Bench Press Championships Saturday at Templin’s Resort.

The competition begins at 8 a.m. Tickets are $10 and $7.

Men’s soccer

Jeff McAllister scored four goals, within one of matching the school record, and Gonzaga University (4-0-0) established a singlegame mark for goals in a 10-1 victory over Evergreen State (1-3-0) at Martin Field.

Volleyball

Eight players, led by Eileen Daniels with nine, had kills as the Community Colleges of Spokane thumped Blue Mountain 15-1, 15-6 and 17-15 at Spokane Falls CC.
