Excited Lake City Remains Unbeaten

Dustin Newlun Correspondent

Cheers and celebrating could be heard for miles away from Lake City’s football stadium Friday night after the Timberwolves beat Clarkston 21-7, taking their record to 2-0 for the first time in school history.

The T-Wolves had every reason to be celebrating. It was no ordinary game for them, it was their homecoming.

“You hope on homecoming week that you don’t make too many mental mistakes, because the kids have been going all week long,” said LC’s coach Van Troxel. “That’s the thing that kills you is the mental mistakes.

Surprisingly, homecoming is a hard one to win. When you spend all week talking about what this week is all about, and then you don’t win, it’s no fun. I’m real pleased.”

Fullback Scott Bushnell led the T-Wolves to victory for the second week in a row with 192 yards rushing on 25 carries and two more touchdowns.

The first TD came in the second quarter on a pitch by quarterback Chad Troxel for a 6-yard score. It came after the T-Wolves moved the ball 80 yards on 10 plays. However, Clarkston scored the game’s first points. The Bantam’s Tom Lyden ran 79 yards on six carries to set up a four-yard touchdown.

Eight plays later, on the first play of the second quarter, Chad Troxel, who ran for 60 yards on nine carries, responded with a touchdown of his own. He also threw for 54 yards on seven passes.

Bushnell’s second touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 9-yard run.

Penalties and simple mistakes were the downfall for the Bantams.

Seven yards from a touchdown in the second quarter, Clarkston was called for a delay-of-game penalty, which led to a fourth down after quarterback Zack Blankinship threw an incomplete pass. A failed field goal by Clarkston gave the ball to the T-Wolves.

With nearly 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter, LC wide receiver Josh Jaeger was able to intercept a pass from Clarkston, giving the T-Wolves the chance to take the last 5 minutes off the clock.
