Abby Hornstein Mead Year: Senior Sport: Volleyball Position: Outside Hitter

Mead’s volleyball team boasts the “Killer S’s,” three-year varsity players Staci Schuerman, Kortney Stewart and Kelsey Sturm.

Yet another senior, Abby Hornstein, continues to pick up praise from Greater Spokane League coaches because of her steadiness.

“I’d like to think I’m consistent in every way,” Hornstein said. “For me, that makes for a good player.”

Mead, with five returners from last year’s third-place State AAA team, leads the GSL with a 7-0 record heading into today’s match at Mt. Spokane.

The Panthers skied to the top by defeating top-ranked Ferris last Friday. Mead rallied in games it trailed 14-9 and 11-5.

“That was just the sort of intensity this team has,” said Hornstein, a two-year starter.

Hornstein, a Spokane native, is Mead’s tallest player at 5-foot-11, but eight others are at least 5-9. Many Panthers have club-ball experience; Hornstein played on a team with GSL all-league returners Missy Blackshire and Janelle Morrisette of Ferris, and Erin Naipo of Lewis and Clark.

Hornstein and Schuerman are co-captains, as voted by the team.

Hornstein also set a school record last year by running the 100 meters in 12.1 seconds. , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Photo
