Research Leads To Ph.D For Vickie Parker-Clark

Vickie Parker-Clark, an extension professor for the University of Idaho and extension educator in Kootenai County, has received her Ph.D in plant science.

Parker-Clark, who has held her Kootenai County position since 1987, did research developing a growth stage model for seedling Kentucky bluegrass and identifying leaf characteristics associated with flowering. The research was part of a tri-state (Idaho, Washington and Oregon) grass seed research program.

Capt. Robert D.B. Sanchez, of Fairchild Air Force Base, has been assigned as Commander of the Army Recruiting Company in Spokane, including stations under his command located in north and south Spokane, Opportunity and Colville, Wash., and Coeur d’Alene, Moscow, Lewiston and Sandpoint, Idaho.

Sanchez, who is a 13-year Army veteran, received an associate of applied science in 1989 and a bachelor of science in electrical engineering technology, both from the New Mexico State University and an associate of supervisory leadership in 1987 from Hawaii Pacific Univeristy in Honolulu.

Other assignments Sanchez held include Battalion Signal Officer, 70th Ordnance Battalion and in Headquarters, Headquarters Detachment, 70th Ordnance Battalion, Texas.

For the second consecutive year, four University of Idaho students were selected to participate in the NASA Reduced Gravity Student Flight Program. Students are listed below.

Josh Sementi, Coeur d’Alene; David Willford, Idaho Falls; and Kenton and Tricia Veeder, from Lewiston, Idaho, and Clarkston, Wash., respectively.

The two-week program allows students to experience weightlessness and zero-gravity conditions aboard a Boeing KC-135A at Ellington Field in Texas at the home of the Johnson Space Center’s Reduced Gravity Program.

The students are in the process of designing and building equipment for their experiment that will be installed on the plane.

Students plan on studying vapor yields of water boiling due to reduced pressure in both microgravity and standard gravity conditions.

Wesley D. Friesen, a 1995 East Valley High School graduate and son of Judy Labreche of Post Falls, and Ron D. Friesen of Greenacres, has enlisted in the Army’s Delayed Entry Program as an Infantryman.

Friesen qualifies for up to $26,000 under the Army College Fund program due to enlistment choice and test scores and will leave for basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., in March.
