County Rejects Plea To Pay For Golf Shed At Meadowwood

A former golf pro won’t get the money he thinks he deserves for building a shed for golf cars at MeadowWood Golf Course.

Kaye Walker, who retired last year from the Liberty Lake course, asked county commissions to pay him for the 2,400-square-foot shed he built in 1988.

County staff initially offered $18,000 for the building, $2,000 less than its appraised value.

On Tuesday, county commissioners said they intend to pay Walker nothing, since he built the shed with no written guarantee he’d be reimbursed for its cost. Legally, commissioners said, the shed is public property.

Walker’s replacement, Bob Scott, pays the county $3,000 a year to use the shed.

Walker contends he had a verbal agreement for reimbursement with former parks director Sam Angove, said Fran Boxer, the county’s assistant chief administrative officer, who oversees golf courses. Walker couldn’t be reached for comment.

Walker used the shed to store the cars he rented to golfers. Pros at most other courses must find off-site storage for their cars during the off-season, commissioners said.

In addition, Walker charged 12 golfers $30 a month to store their own cars in the shed, said Boxer.

At that rate, the leases could have netted Walker $34,500 during his eight years as pro - more than three times his $10,000 construction cost, said Commissioner Kate McCaslin.

“Send him a nice letter and tell him … there’s no support” for paying his bill, Commissioner Phil Harris told Boxer.
