Olympic Village Opens

Some Americans were among the first to check into their quarters as the Olympic Village officially opened in Nagano, Japan.

Most of the arrivals were team officials, but some athletes were included. The Winter Olympics begin Feb. 7.

In Bend, Ore., Rosey Fletcher of Alaska outbattled a snowstorm to become the first American Olympic snowboarder and Chris Klug of Aspen, Colo., became the second by winning a giant slalom qualifier at Mount Bachelor resort.

Germany’s Katja Seizinger won a World Cup super-G race in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, for her seventh triumph this season.

Former World Cup champion Anita Wachter of Austria tore knee ligaments, ending her Olympic chances and possibly her career.

Kristian Ghedina won the classic Hahnenkamm World Cup downhill - the first-ever Italian victory on the prestigious Streif track near Kitzbuehel, Austria. Switzerland’s Didier Cuche was a close second.
