Usd’s Bishop Checkmates Gonzaga

College women

Amanda Bishop contributed a steal and three free throws in the final 80 seconds Saturday night, helping University of San Diego nail down a 57-50 West Coast Conference road victory over Gonzaga in Martin Centre.

USD (9-9, 4-2) opened up an 18-point lead over slump-ridden Gonzaga (9-9, 1-5) and never trailed.

The Toreros, up 25-7 with 8:12 to go in the first half, led the Bulldogs 31-24 at the intermission.

Gonzaga shot poorly, making only 19 of 56 field-goal attempts, offsetting 21 USD turnovers that led to 18 points, more than one-third of Gonzaga’s total.

Susie Erpelding and Nailah Thompson accounted for most of San Diego’s scoring, picking up 18 and 13 points, respectively.

Staci Andrews led Gonzaga with 11 points. She also had a team-high eight rebounds.

Gonzaga pulled the deficit down to six points when Andrews canned a 3-pointer, making it 52-46 with 2:01 left in the game. However, after Thompson answered with a layin for San Diego, Bishop stole the ball for the Toreros and made the first of two foul shots with 1:17 to go.

Then, after Gonzaga’s Melanie Tipps made two free throws and Sandy Gere put in a layin to make it 55-50, Andrews fouled Bishop at the 11-second mark. Bishop made both free throws to put the game on ice.
