The Huskies scored 39 points, eight more than EWU, with the help of 1-2-3 finishes in the 400 meters and the 1,000 meters. Eastern swept the first three places in the shot put, which was won by Jay Martell with a heave of 52 feet, 9-1/2 inches.

WSU scored 27 points for third place, with Tony Boitano, who cleared 16-0-3/4 leading a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault. Arend Watkins of WSU just failed to reach the provisional qualifying standard in the 55-meter hurdles. Watkins, an easy winner, was timed in 7.42 seconds. The standard is 7.39.

UW scored 51 points to dominate the women’s competition. EWU placed second with 27 points, five more than Montana.

WSU Andrea Thornton broke the field house record for the weight throw with a toss of 50-2-3/4. Eastern’s Taneka Sauls longjumped 18-3-3/4 to narrowly miss her own school record while finishing second to Michelle Reid of Washington, who jumped 18-7.
