Cal Slugger’s Two Homers Do In Washington State

Xavier Nady belted two home runs and drove home four runs to lead California past Washington State 10-6 Saturday in the first game of a three-game weekend series at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, Calif.

Nady’s three-run homer to left field in the sixth inning put Cal (9-11-1) ahead for good and made a winner of Jason Dennis (2-1), the second Golden Bears pitcher, who threw four innings of one-hit ball.

Starter Wade Parrish (3-1) of WSU (7-8) suffered his first setback of the season.

Loyola Marymount scored 22 runs and racked up 28 hits, sweeping Gonzaga 14-3 and 8-7 in a doubleheader at George Page Stadium in Los Angeles.

In the first game, the Lions (12-9-1, 2-0) jumped out to a six-run lead in the first inning. Loyola also scored five runs in the eighth.

In the second, the Bulldogs (2-13, 0-5) led 7-3 after six innings, but the Lions won it with two runs in the seventh and three in the ninth.

The 20th-ranked Washington Huskies gave up seven home runs during a Pac-10-North doubleheader against Portland State, but hit six of their own to sweep the Vikings 10-7 and 18-5 at Seattle.

Whitworth (5-5, 3-1) split a doubleheader against visiting Pacific (2-4, 1-1), losing the first game 9-5 and winning the second 11-4.

Pirate Jack Arthaud hit two home runs and drove in four runs in a losing cause in the first game.

Whitworth scored seven runs in the fourth inning of the nightcap.

CC Spokane earned a split against Treasure Valley, winning the first game 18-0, but losing 13-12 in the second.

In the first game, CCS’ Mark McDaniels went 4 for 5, including a homer, with 5 RBIs.

College softball

The Whitworth women lost their second twinbill in as many days, dropping 14-0 and 13-3 games to Pacific Lutheran at Franklin Park.

PLU scored eight runs in the sixth inning of the first game, and seven in the first two innings of the nightcap.

College track

Ricks CC won both the men and women’s titles at the Bigfoot Open hosted by Spokane Falls CC.

CC Spokane came in second and North Idaho College finished third.

Eastern Washington’s Adrienne Wilson, Taneka Sauls and Jenifer Bauman swept the long jump.
