Winners, Weather Dominate

Prep track, soccer

There were four sweeps but everyone was almost swept away by the weather as the Greater Spokane League track season opened Thursday afternoon.

A spring storm swept through town, making life miserable for the athletes in their first league meet. Cold, biting wind, rain and hail kept marks down but didn’t keep favored teams from sweeping.

Both the boys and girls of Central Valley, Lewis and Clark, Shadle Park and University won.

Ferris and Mead had byes in the new two-division setup.

At Mt. Spokane, the Wildcats made a surprising showing against Lewis and Clark.

On the boys side, LC edged Mt. Spokane 78-1/2-66-1/2. The girls were almost as close, with the Tigers getting by 78-62.

Cameron Stewart improved his shot put almost 5 feet to 47 feet, 2 inches, on his last throw to make him a triple winner for Mt. Spokane. He also took the discus and javelin.

Tom Becker won the 800 and 3,200 for the Wildcats.

Teresa Brooks coasted to easy wins in the 200 and 400 for LC and Jamie Rosenquist won the 800 and 1,600.

For Mt. Spokane, Rachel Bertholt was a double winner in the long and high jumps.

At Central Valley, the CV girls won every event except the 3,200, which they didn’t enter because of the weather, to dominate North Central 115-17. The only double winner for the Bears was Heather Harding in the javelin and discus.

On the boys side, depth was a big difference as the Bears won 93-47. The only double winner was NC hurdler Ty Carter.

At Shadle Park, Lisa Hansen won both hurdles and the 100 to lead the Highlanders to a 102-39 victory over Gonzaga Prep.

Her time of 16 seconds in the 100 hurdles was the best under the conditions.

Rachel Jones won the horizontal jumps for the Highlanders.

Nick Kimmet won the sprints and Greg Forni took the hurdles and both were on two victorious relay teams to lead the Shadle boys past the Bullpups 97-46.

Jeff Klages also broke 2 minutes in the 800.

Matt Blaine captured the high jump and triple jump for the Bullpups.

At Rogers, Julie Schroeder won three events to lead U-Hi past the Pirates 98-39.

Schroeder went 16-7-1/2 in the long jump, easily topping the area best, and won the triple jump and 200.

State champion Casey Lektorich of University threw the javelin 122-1 for an area best.

Angel Fairbanks won the shot put and discus for the Pirates.

U-Hi’s boys won 108-36 as Jake Roberts swept the hurdles and sophomore Anthony Buchanan won the sprints, including a 10.8 clocking in the 100.

Buchanan’s 22.4 in the 200 is also an area best.

Against Chewelah, Colville scored both of the game’s goals, but the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Zach Cashion gave the home-standing Indians (3-1-1) a 1-0 lead when he tapped in a short cross from a teammate in the 75th minute.

Two minutes later, the Cougars got even when the Indians put the ball in their own goal.

George Souza controlled the middle and contributed a goal and an assist as visiting Pullman topped Deer Park 6-1.

The Greyhounds (1-0) scored the first four goals but the Stags (1-4) got on the board in the second half.
