Cheney science teacher wins grant

Tammie Schrader, a seventh-grade science and math teacher at Cheney Middle School has been awarded an $8,500 grant from the American Physiological Society. The Frontiers in Physiology 2004 Professional Development Fellowship grant is awarded to middle and high school level science teachers across the country.

Schrader has been teaching science for five years and was one of 24 teachers chosen nationwide.

This year, 22 APS members currently working in a laboratory setting volunteered to host winning teachers for a summer of in-depth scientific research.

Schrader will study with Dona F. Boggs, Ph.D., at Eastern Washington University.

MESA Team has outstanding performance

The Spokane MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement) High School Team — DeAndra Kenoly, Douglas May and Jennifer McGlothen, from North Central and Lewis and Clark high schools — was outstanding at the MESA USA competition, earning second place overall. The team won first place for its technical paper and second place for its oral presentation.
