State OKs ISU’s new building project

POCATELLO, Idaho – The state Board of Education on Monday gave Idaho State University the go-ahead to build a huge multi-use center on the Pocatello campus despite a 12 percent cost overrun.

The board voted 4-2 to approve the Rendezvous Center project at the increased cost of nearly $43 million over objections of President Rod Lewis of Boise and former President Blake Hall of Idaho Falls.

“You might be able to stretch and afford it, but there’s no question some other areas will have to sacrifice,” Hall told the board.

The 250,000-square-foot building will house 50 classrooms, a computer center, a large meeting room and 302 suite-style dormitory units.

Idaho State President Richard Bowen said the school would cover the additional $4.7 million through general bonds.

He told the board initially that the project would have to be significantly scaled back if it were brought back in line with its original $38 million budget.

In that case, Bowen said the entire project should be reassessed.

Public Works Director Larry Osgood said about 30,000 square feet would have to be cut to avoid a budget overrun.

He said the price of building materials, particularly steel, is largely responsible for the escalating price tag.
