Bassett, Brophy net scholastic honors as Notre Dame golfers

Notre Dame’s Sarah Bassett and Katie Brophy were selected to the 2003-2004 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team.

Bassett, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High, posted a 3.58 grade point average as a psychology major in the College of Arts and Letters. A two-year monogram winner, Bassett recorded a 79.92 stroke average this season with a pair of top ten finishes. She has made the Dean’s List twice while maintaining a 79.58 career stroke average which is good for third all-time at Notre Dame.

Brophy is a repeat selection to the NGCA All-American Scholar Team, accumulating a 3.566 grade point average as a sociology and Spanish major. The second-year standout wound up second on the team with a career-low 77.58 stroke average which is the second-best single-season mark in school history. She placed in the top 10 in five tournaments, including three top-five finishes and a season-best tie for second place at the IU Invitational. A two-time All-Big East selection, Brophy also logged a career-low score of 221 in the Shootout at the Legends of Indiana, the third lowest individual 54-hole score in Irish history.

“North Idaho College softball player Jill Oglesbee was recently named to the National Junior College Athletic Association 2003-2004 Academic All-American Team. Oglesbee, a third baseman from Spokane and graduate of University High, maintained a 3.67 grade point average which qualified her for the academic team. She was also a two-time selection to the Region 18 Scenic West Athletic Conference All-Region First Team and was named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar Athlete during the 2002-2003 season.

“Eastern Oregon University shortstop Casi Reisenauer, a senior from Spirit Lake, Idaho, has been named to the NAIA Academic All-America Team for softball for the second straight year. She is a graduate of Timberlake High and Big Bend Community College. Reisenauer hit over .360 and made All-League and All-Academic teams all four years in college.

Swimming

Spokane’s Susanne Simpson won two events, at the FINA Masters World Championships held in June in Riccione, Italy. She competed in the maximum five events allowed over the seven days of swimming competition, winning the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:39.93 and the 200-meter butterfly in 2:32.57. Simpson, the only competitor from the Inland Northwest to attend, also placed second in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly and third in the 800-meter freestyle.
