Ferris claims GSL crown with win over Rogers
Seniors Ryan Shelby had 14 points and Steve Stockton scored a season-high 13 to lead Ferris past visiting Rogers 73-64 Tuesday night at Wayne Gilman Court.
With the win, the Saxons earned their 11th Greater Spokane League boys basketball title With Barry Olsen leading the Saxons to a 11-2 record, it also marked the third consecutive time a first-year Ferris head coach had claimed the title.
Gilman won the GSL crown in 1983-84 with a 14-2 record and Don Van Lierop’s first Ferris team went 18-2 to take the 2001-2002 title, the last time the Saxons were league champs.
The Saxons (17-3 overall and 11-2 in the GSL) outscored the visiting Pirates 28-18 in the second quarter behind Shelby’s eight points. Four Saxons finished in double figures.
GSL scoring leader Scotty Livengood, a sophomore, had 25 for Rogers (2-19, 0-13).
The first-place finish also earns the Saxons an automatic regional berth.
The Saxons will play for seeding starting Feb. 24.
