Wie falls in Publinx quarterfinal

Associated Press

Michelle Wie’s hopes for a spot in next year’s Masters ended Friday when Clay Ogden birdied four of the first five holes and eased to a 5-and-4 victory in their quarterfinal match at the U.S. Amateur Public Links in Lebanon, Ohio.

The 15-year-old high school junior needed to win the tournament to become the first woman to get an invitation to the Masters.

Wie dispatched her opponents in her first three matches before running into Ogden, a junior at Brigham Young University from West Point, Utah.

Ogden was 4-up after the first five holes and never let up.

The lead swelled to 5-up at the turn when Wie’s approach at No. 9 hit a tree and bounced into a lake. It was one of the few mistakes she made.

She won her only hole when Ogden bogeyed 10, but Ogden came right back with a birdie to win the 11th and closed out the match three holes later.

Ogden beat University of Wisconsin junior Garrett Jones 2-and-1 to advance to today’s 36-hole final at Shaker Run Golf Club against Martin Ureta of Chile, who needed 20 holes to eliminate medalist Anthony Kim, a first-team All-American at Oklahoma.

•Tiffany Chudy, a sophomore at the University of Florida, upset defending champion Ya-Ni Tseng 4 and 2 in the semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links in Kansas City, Mo.

Chudy will play Eun Jung Lee of South Korea in today’s 36-hole final. Lee defeated Jane Rah, a 14-year-old from Torrance, Calif., 5 and 4, in the other semifinal.

PGA

Winless on the PGA Tour since 1993 and playing in only his sixth tournament of the year, David Edwards, 49, shot a 9-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead after the second round of the B.C. Open in Endicott, N.Y.

Edwards was at 15-under 129, one shot off the 36-hole tournament record set in 1987 by two-time champion Joey Sindelar and matched two years ago by Steve Lowery.

First-round co-leader Matt Hendrix (67) was one stroke back.

LPGA

Janice Moodie will take a two-stroke lead into the weekend at the Canadian Women’s Open in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Moodie, a two-time LPGA Tour winner, shot 69 Friday and had a 9-under 135 total for a two-stroke lead over Il Mi Chung (68) and a three-shot advantage over Young-A Yang (68) and Angela Stanford (69).

Dawn Coe-Jones topped the record 27 Canadians in the field, shooting a 70 to finish at 1 under. Lorie Kane, Angie Green, Kareen Qually and Marie-Josee Rouleau were the only other Canadians to make the cut.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum made the cut 147 after shooting a 76 Friday.

Celebrity Championship

Six-time tourney winner Rick Rhoden has the first-round lead with a 5-under-par 67 at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Stateline, Nev., while NBA stars Chris Webber and Charles Barkley are battling over a $50,000 side bet on who will finish last.

The current Philadelphia 76er challenged the former 76er to the wager in which the loser will pay to the winner’s favorite charity. Barkley has minus 25 Stableford points to Webber’s negative 27.

Rhoden leads with 30 total points in the modified Stableford scoring system that awards six points for eagle, three for birdie, one for par, zero for bogey and minus two for double bogey or worse.

Ex-NFL quarterbacks Mark Rypien of Spokane and Billy Joe Tolliver were tied for second with 28 points apiece.

They were followed by Trent Dilfer, Chris Chandler and Grant Fuhr, each with 25.
