Indians receive punch at shortstop in Duran

The Spokesman-Review

Shortstop German Duran, a sixth-round selection in this year’s amateur draft, will join the Spokane Indians today in preparation for Tuesday’s Northwest League baseball opener.

Duran will work out with the Indians on Sunday, when the team completes its seven-day minicamp. Spokane will leave for Eugene, Ore., on Monday morning, taking a 485-mile bus trip for its opening five-game series with the Emeralds.

Duran hit .330 as a freshman for Texas Christian University in 2004. He transferred to Weatherford (Texas) College as a sophomore and hit .357 with 39 runs batted in and a team-record 13 home runs.

“Jayson Miller (Washington State University) scattered seven hits and struck out five in a complete game as the Wenatchee AppleSox opened their West Coast Collegiate League play with a 2-0 win over the Spokane RiverHawks (3-2, 2-1) at Avista Stadium.

Jordan Moore (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls High) allowed two earned runs and struck out six in nine innings.

Today’s probable starters are the RiverHawks’ Scott Parrish (Colfax High) against Brandon Harmon (Gonzaga University/Shadle Park High).
