Gant dazzles while leading Pullman’s boys to district 2A track title

Ashton Gant won three events and teamed up on a winning relay team Friday while leading Pullman’s boys to the team title at the District 7 2A track and field meet at Riverside High.

Gant won the 100-meter run (10.7 seconds), the 200 (22.2) and the long jump (20 feet, 7 1/2 inches), and joined on the winning 400 relay (44.5). Pullman scored 162 points to hold off Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls (123.5) and Colville (116).

Lakeside’s girls scored 231 points for a 51-point gap over Pullman. Freshmen runners Gale Nelson (100) and Kayloni Jones (800) had wins for the victorious Eagles and ran legs on winning relay teams.

Ben Wargo added to Pullman’s effort by taking the boys 110 (16.2) and 300 (40.6) hurdles.

Colville’s Caitlin McGrane won the girls 200 (26.0), 400 (58.7) and 100 hurdles (14.9), and ran a leg on the winning 800 relay.

Clarissa Harston won the triple jump (32-9 1/2 ) and Ashley Stabl took the 300 hurdles (46.7) while leading Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia to 34 points and the team lead after the first day of the District 9 B meet at Washington State University’s Mooberry Track. Katie Corder won the shot put (36-2 1/2 ) and placed second in the javelin to lead second-place St. John-Endicott to 30 points. LaCrosse-Washtucna’s Pam Passmore won the javelin at 117-7. Waitsburg’s boys, with titles from Wade Bennett in the long jump (18-11 1/2 ) and Matt Baker in the 300 hurdles (42.1) scored 58 points to take a 16-point lead over DeSales. T-O/R’s Kris Widman won the high jump at 6-0.

Tennis

The Greater Spokane League flexed its muscles in boys and girls singles play during the 4A regional tennis tournament at Yakima’s Kissel Park. Whitman Hough of Ferris and Ben Gullickson of Lewis and Clark won boys semifinals to advance to today’s championship match. LC teammates Elise Otto and Anna Gullickson will play for the girls singles title after winning semifinals. Seven of eight players in singles semifinals came from the GSL. Doubles was a different story, with every semifinal winner coming from the Big Nine Conference. Mt. Spokane’s Jon Assmus and Andy Dorr were the only GSL participants in doubles semifinals.

“Clarkston dominated boys singles during the first day of the 3A regional tournament at Sunnyside High. GSL top-seeded Nick Rooney, No. 2 Richard Muszynski and No. 3 Eric Iliff all won their openers to advance to today’s semifinals. East Valley’s Katy Lund, the top seed, was the lone GSL player to make the girls singles semifinals. In doubles, West Valley-Spokane’s Glen Water and Tom Griner moved to the semifinals in boys doubles, and North Central’s team did the same in girls doubles.

“Pullman’s Amy Small and Abby Funabiki advanced to today’s girls doubles semifinals of the 2A regional tournament at Yakima Tennis Club. Other Great Northern League competitors are in consolations.

“Singles players from St. George’s and doubles players from Sprague-Harrington won championships during the District 7 1A/B tournament at Ferris High. Matt Jackson defeated Freeman’s Greg Salisbury 6-3, 6-4 for the boys title, and Caitie Storm topped S-H’s Lauren Stromberger 7-5, 6-4 in girls singles. In doubles, Brian Whipple and Ty Hatcher defeated Freeman’s Andy Nonnenmacher and Danny Matthews 6-2, 7-5 for the boys title. Jamie Larmer and Brittney Timm took the girls crown without dropping a game to Reardan’s Libby Butterfield and Adrianne Benner. All champions advance to the State 1A/B tournament, Friday and next Saturday in Yakima.
