Examine draft comprehensive plan

The draft comprehensive plan can affect you. This plan will be used to develop a zoning map, so make sure it is right. The plan provides for land use, roads, parks, housing, utilities, economic development, the natural environment and capital facilities (public infrastructure).

The most significant change will be to commercial districts, especially along Sprague and Appleway as commercial zones are located at major intersections and space in between is zoned corridor mixed use. A city center at U-City is proposed.

Residential areas are, for the most part, left as they are now. However, a new system of residential zoning is proposed. There will be three zones for low density residential: R1, 40,000 square feet per lot; R2, 10,000 square feet, and R3, 7,000 square feet. R4 will designate medium density; and HDR will designate high density residential.

Roads are also affected. Some roads will be redesignated as collectors, rather than arterials; Valleyway and Fourth will no longer be arterials; and truck routes are designated.

This is your plan and will guide your city for the next 20 years. There is an open house on Wednesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers, and public hearings will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on June 16 at the Spokane Valley Nazarene Church, June 22 at Spokane Valley Community Center and June 23 in City Hall Council Chambers. Examine the plan online at www.spokanevalley.org and give us your comments. Let’s get it right the first time.
