Saffle, Wieber earn berths to state golf tourney

East Valley golfer Ashley Saffle captured Monday’s Region 3A high school tournament against Mid-Valley League competitors to earn one of two Valley berths to next week’s state tournament in Spokane.

Saffle shot 82 at Hangman Valley for medalist honors. She is joined by West Valley’s Ashley Wieber, a four-time state qualifier who finished second in regionals with 86.

Wieber was runner-up for the second year at district after winning regionals as a freshman and sophomore. She finished in the top 20 at state a year ago.

Qualifying for State 1A competition were Freeman’s Devon Moe and Max Riggs. Scotties Darby Moberg and Katie Jacot have qualified for the girls 1A/B tournament.

Valley Christian B boys state golf qualifiers are Andrew Tamura, who shot a two-round total 162 in districts, and Joseph Lindermann, who shot 168.

State golf for all classifications will be played in Spokane Wednesday and Thursday at a variety of golf courses.

Team effort for Bears

Consider Central Valley’s journey into the State 4A high school soccer playoffs, deeper than the program has journeyed before, a team thing. The Bears face Pasco today for a berth in the state semifinals in Sumner.

“I think it’s been a team effort. Everybody’s stepped up,” said coach Brandon Deyarmin. “The defense is playing as well as it has all year. As of late we’ve been plugging up the midfield, where we would get beat game after game. I think the intensity level’s way up.”

Goalkeeper Ryan Skay recorded seven shutouts this year and allowed more than one goal in only three of 17 matches.

On defense, Lucas Chesher and Taylor Fyhrie have been stalwarts, joined by sweeper Brady Coyle, Terry Starr and, of late, Brian Riffel, for added height.

Leading scorer Jay Vela has moved from forward to midfield along with assists leader Jesse Dunbar, Derek Phillips and Joey Balcom in the middle, and Blake Trimmer and Matt Bunch outside.

And the new one-forward set has been a joint effort with Josh Antles, Zach Chesher and Kevin Cameron spelling each other.

“I ask the forwards to play 10 to 12 minutes and go hard,” said Deyarmin.

CV lost to Pasco early in the season, but Deyarmin considers that an advantage.

“They might think they took it to us once and will do it again,” he said. “I also hope it’s in the back of their minds we beat Wenatchee 4-0.”
