Eagles advance to finals

Lizzy Mellor (Colfax High) and Addie Webster each had double-doubles and Brittney Page hit .545 to lead third-seeded Eastern Washington to a 30-23, 26-30, 30-21, 34-32 victory over second-seeded Portland State in the Big Sky Conference volleyball tournament semifinals Friday in Sacramento, Calif.

Mellor had 16 kills and 14 digs, while Webster added 14 kills and 13 digs for the Eagles (23-8). Page chipped in with 13 kills.

Eastern plays Sacramento State (20-9) today for the championship and an automatic NCAA bid. This will be the sixth straight championship match between the two teams.

•Kristin Murray had 18 kills to lead Oregon State (10-12, 6-10) to a 30-22, 28-30, 30-26, 30-28 victory over Washington State in a Pac-10 Conference match at Bohler Gym in Pullman.

Jalen Pendon had a double-double for Washington State (9-21, 2-15) with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Brittany Johnson led four Cougars with double-digit kills with 15.

•WSU signed setter Corina Beyer (Timberlake High of Spirit Lake, Idaho) and libero Kelly Hyder to letters of intent. Beyer led the Tigers to third place in last month’s State 3A tournament.

•Sanja Tomasevic had 15 kills and set her second Washington school record in as many nights as the No. 3 Huskies swept Oregon 30-18, 30-17, 30-22 in a Pac-10 match at Seattle.

Tomasevic had two aces for the Huskies (25-1, 16-1), setting the school’s career mark with 148.

Wrestling

North Idaho earned two pins and a pair of major decisions on its way to a 35-3 victory over Southwestern Oregon in Coos Bay, Ore.

Cody Nicholson and Jake Kallestad each earned second-round pins at 133 and 197 pounds, respectively. Jeff Hedges scored a 10-1 win at 125 and Josh Edmondson (Medical Lake) won 9-1 at 184 for NIC.

Track and field

Washington State signed four athletes to letters of intent. Sprinter Princess Joy Griffey, 800-meter runner Bob Hewitt-Gaffney and distance runners Dan Geib and Anna Layman (Central Valley) will join the Cougars for the 2006-07 season.

Hockey

Alex Lewica and Jon Clark each scored two goals as the Spokane Flyers defeated Tri-City 7-2 in a Northern Pacific Hockey League game at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
