Brayton, Olerud nominated for Hall

Two former Washington State Cougars were included among the 86 players and coaches nominated for the first class in the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

Long-time Cougars coach Bobo Brayton was among 12 retired post-World War II coaches, including former Pac-10 opponents Rod Deadeaux of USC, Jerry Kindall of Arizona, and Arizona State’s Bobby Winkles and Jim Brock.

Infielder/pitcher John Olerud was one of 22 post-War players nominated. Brayton and Olerud were the only Northwest nominees.

•Community Colleges of Spokane scored a combined 21 runs in Wednesday’s doubleheader sweep of Yakima Valley CC in NWAACC play at Yakima.

In the early game, Mike Campo went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, including a double and a solo shot in the first, as the Sasquatch (10-16, 5-5) routed the Yaks (14-14, 0-10) 9-1. John Whiteside hit a solo shot in the third, as the Sasquatch won the late game 12-2.

Boys soccer

Greater Spokane League: Taylor Yonago‘s goal at the 63-minute mark was the difference as Ferris pulled out a 2-1 win over visiting Lewis and Clark (4-4, 4-3). Joe Hatcher also scored for the Saxons (6-1, 6-1), who remain in second place along with Mead and Central Valley. … Tim Roffler scored the lone goal as Mt. Spokane (5-4, 4-3) blanked visiting Rogers (0-8, 0-7) 1-0. … Jesse Dunbar’s goal at the 46-minute mark was all the offense Central Valley (7-2, 6-1) needed in a 1-0 win at Shadle Park (3-6, 2-5). … Cole Abramson notched two goals in first-place East Valley’s (7-0, 7-0) 6-1 rout at West Valley (2-7, 0-7). … Travis Green scored a pair of goals in the span of a minute to boost North Central (7-2, 5-2) in a 3-0 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep (1-7, 0-7). … Ian Matson scored a pair of goals and Tim Doggett got three assists in Mead’s (6-2, 6-1) 7-0 shutout of visiting Clarkston (1-8, 1-6). … Mitch Weller scored two goals in Cheney’s (7-3, 5-2) 4-1 win at University (3-5, 3-4).

Softball

Greater Spokane League: Ashley Fargher went 3 for 3 with six RBIs as University steamrolled visiting Lewis and Clark (0-8, 0-8) 15-1. Riki Schiermeister pitched four innings to earn her second win of the season and totaled three hits and three runs for the Titans (8-1, 8-0).

Boys golf

Greater Spokane League: Ferris had three players in the 70s and shot a 384 to run away with the second league meet of the year at Liberty Lake Golf Course. The Saxons were led by Ryan Jones, who shot a second-place score of 72 over the 6,373 yard, par-70 track. Mead and University finished tied for second at 396. Central Valley’s Nick Grigsby fired a 71 to earn medalist honors.

Women’s tennis

Eastern Washington University’s Kasey Knox was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week after posting a 4-0 record last week.
