Mead senior wins epidemiology scholarship

Jordan M. Schatz, a senior at Mead High School, has been awarded a $1,000 college scholarship as a regional semi-finalist in the Young Epidemiology Scholars competition.

The competition is sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and administered by the College Board.

Nationally, 700 students enter the competition, which is designed to spur students’ interest in epidemiology, the branch of medicine that deals with the spread of disease.

Nearly half a million dollars in scholarships are awarded each year to students who develop research projects that use the principles of epidemiology to explore a health-related issue. The projects are judged by epidemiology educators.

Schatz’s project is entitled “Rampant Bullying in High School Students with Its Associated Mental Health Effects on the Pacific Northwest Teenager.”
