Vikings prevail over Lake City

Mike Saunders Correspondent

It was a game Coeur d’Alene had to win, and it did.

Barely.

The Vikings saw a 4-1 lead evaporate in the sixth inning Wednesday at Lake City, but held on for a 5-4 win that puts them squarely back in the thick of the Inland Empire League baseball picture.

Though it’s still early in the season, Coeur d’Alene (6-2 overall, 3-2 IEL) couldn’t afford another league loss, particularly to crosstown 5A rival Lake City (7-2, 3-1).

CdA junior Andy Seaman, who gave up three runs in the sixth to let the Timberwolves back in, delivered a game-winning RBI single to right in the top of the seventh.

The Vikings went up 3-0 in the fourth on Seaman’s RBI fister over third base and Brock Douglas’ hard-hit, two-run single down the right-field line.

LC got one back in the bottom of the inning when Brent Everson’s groundout to short scored Cory Kreighbaum, who singled to lead off the inning.

The score held at 3-1 until the sixth, which Seaman led off with a rocket double over Kreighbaum in center, later scoring on third baseman Joe Scoggin’s throwing error.

Then, with two outs and nobody on in the home half of the sixth, as the on-again, off-again spring weather turned chilly, the LC bats turned hot.

Scoggin got things started with a double to deep right-center and Everson promptly knocked him in with a hot one-hopper past shortstop. After Zach Clanton drew a walk, junior Darren Hammons ripped a pinch-hit, two-run triple to right past a diving Douglas to tie the game at 4. A strikeout ended the inning.

Vikings starter Jake Hall led off the seventh with a walk. Alex Reyes sacrificed Hall to second and he moved to third on Alex Capaul’s balk.

On the next pitch, Seaman hit one to shallow right to bring Hall home, earning his team – and himself – the victory.

Coeur d’Alene placed two players in the top five on its way to a team score of 387, edging Lewiston by three strokes to win Coeur d’Alene’s invitational at the Hayden Lake Country Club. Michelle Olsen placed second overall for CdA with a 92 over the 5,597 yard, par-72 course. Medalist Genna Dodge shot a 90 for third-place Post Falls (420).
