Spokane’s on the move, and numbers prove it

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

Based on data provided by a national moving company, Spokane ranked as the 10th most popular mid-sized destination for family moves during 2005.

U-Haul’s annual Top Growth Cities Report ranks large and midsized U.S. cities. This year the cities with the highest percentage of moves into their areas were Austin, Texas, among large cities and Boise, which topped the mid-sized city list, Phoenix-based U-Haul said in a press release.

Rankings reflect the difference between the number of families using U-Haul who moved into an area compared with those leaving it.

Last year, U-Haul’s figures showed 12.8 percent more people moving into Boise than people leaving that community. Spokane’s score was 5.5 percent during 2005, according to U-Haul.

In the larger-city ranking, Austin’s score was 6.5 percent, followed by Aurora, Ill., at 5.9 percent and Indianapolis at 5.2 percent.

Behind Boise in the midsized listing were Victorville, Calif., at 11.5 percent, and Des Moines, Iowa, at 10.1 percent.

A U-Haul press release said the rankings are based on more than 1.5 million rental transactions in 2005.
