Cink passes Woods for lead

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Tiger Woods kept his ball on the golf course Saturday, but he had trouble getting it in the hole. With his longest streak of bogeys in nearly 10 years, that allowed Stewart Cink to find himself in a familiar spot at the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

Cink made two great par saves early in his round that kept his momentum, then rolled to a 6-under-par 64 that allowed him to shoot past Woods, who bogeyed four straight holes, and Davis Love III and into a one-shot lead at this World Golf Championship.

Cink won in 2004 at Firestone South, a week after he was named a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup team. He was picked again for the U.S. team by Tom Lehman on Monday, and can only hope he gets the same result.

But it wasn’t quite the same.

Cink, who was at 9-under 201, had a five-shot lead going into the final round two years ago. The lead is only one shot this time over Woods, Love and Paul Casey of England, who matched Cink with a 64.

PGA

At Reno, Nev., PGA Tour veteran Bob Estes and second-year player Will MacKenzie share the lead heading into the final round of the Reno-Tahoe Open at 19-under 197.

■Yusaku Miyazato’s two holes-in-one at the Reno-Tahoe Open on Friday may not have been the only time a player has carded a pair of aces in the same round in PGA Tour history. The PGA reports that according to Hartford Courant reporter Bruce Berlet, W.W. “Bill” Whedon accomplished the feat in the 1955 Insurance City Open” at Wethersfield (Conn.) Country Club.

Champions Tour

Bobby Wadkins and Lonnie Nielsen share a one-stroke lead going into today’s final round of The Tradition, the season’s final major on the Champions Tour.

Wadkins shot a 71 for an 11-under 205 after the first three rounds on the par-72, 7,150-yard course at the Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club west of Portland.

Wadkins missed a 6-foot par putt on the 18th to drop a stroke, and Nielsen made a 5-foot par putt to finish with a 68.

LPGA

Lorena Ochoa shot an 8-under 64 to take a two-shot lead heading into the final round of the Wendy’s Championship for Children in Dublin, Ohio.

She stands at 17-under 199 heading into the final round. Her third-round score was one off the competitive-course record at Tartan Fields Golf Club.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, shot a 67 and is at 210. Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., shot a 69 and is at 211.

U.S. Amateur

Richie Ramsay defeated Webb Simpson 1-up in the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

In the other semifinal, John Kelly’s steady play propelled him to a 2-and-1 victory over Ryan Yip of Canada.
