Cyclist Minor prepares for major area event

Doug Minor, 51, of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., will be part of Team USA competing at the Union Cyclist International Mountain Bike Masters World Championships at Sun Peaks (British Columbia) Resort Friday through next Sunday. He will compete in the downhill event.

Minor has competed in downhill mountain bike racing for six years and carries Expert Class status in the 50 and older age bracket with the National Off-Road Bicycling Association. He races for Bicycle Butler in Spokane.

Baseball

Lakeside High School 2006 graduate Cody Reeves has signed a letter of intent to play for Spokane Falls Community College next school year. Reeves played shortstop for the Eagles last year.

Softball

Shawn Montee Timber Company, a senior softball team out of Coeur d’Alene, took first place in the AA, 50+ age division at the Northwest Championships of Senior Softball, held in Portland. The team swept through the double-elimination tournament undefeated.

Lee Libera, Wade Edington, John Klingaman, Tom Fordham and Bob Legasa were all selected as tournament all-stars.

The team will now compete at the Senior Softball USA World Championships in Seattle, the Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Fla., and the National Senior Games in Louisville, Ky.

Miscellany

Hayden Lake’s George Mathews won the weight pentathlon in the men’s 60-64 age division at the USA Track and Field Masters National Weight Pentathlon at the Sager Ranch in Wilsall, Mont., on Aug. 19.

The weight pentathlon consists of the hammer throw, shot put, discus, javelin and weight throw. Mathews finished with 4,100 total points.
