WSU finishes 3-1 at tourney

Corina Beyer tallied 96 assists Saturday as Washington State split two matches at the Jackrabbit Kickoff Volleyball Classic Saturday in Brookings, S.D.

The Cougars (3-1) defeated Weber State in three games before losing in four games to South Dakota State (4-0) in the championship.

Also at the tourney, junior Becky Jones collected 45 kills on the day as Gonzaga dropped two five-game matches.

The Bulldogs (1-3) lost their morning match to North Dakota State (1-3). South Dakota State edged Gonzaga in the afternoon match, beating the Bulldogs 30-25, 23-30, 28-30, 30-24, 15-12.

Beyer (Timberlake High) and teammate Adetokunbo Faleti were selected to the all-tournament team along with Gonzaga’s Jones.

WSU returns to action Tuesday at Portland. The Bulldogs host the Gonzaga Invitational, beginning Friday.

•Brittney Page and Kristen Ponce were named to the all-tournament team as Eastern Washington split two matches to capture second place at the Best Western Classic in Wichita, Kan.

The Eagles (3-1) were swept by Wichita State (4-0) before defeating Texas-San Antonio (2-2) in four games.

Page and Addie Webster totaled 27 kills each on the day. Ponce posted 44 digs in the two matches.

Eastern travels to New York to play Manhattan College on Wednesday.

•Idaho dropped its final match of the Sooner Legends Nike Invitational, losing 30-25, 30-20, 30-17 to host Oklahoma (1-1) in Norman.

Senior Amanda Bowman led the Vandals (0-3) with 11 kills. She also tallied seven digs and one block.

The Vandals return to the court Friday when they face Missouri in South Bend, Ind., at the Notre Dame Tournament.

Women’s soccer

Lisa Carter scored once and had one assist as North Idaho defeated visiting Columbia Basin 5-1 in a non-league matchup.

Whitney Melton scored an unassisted goal in the 16th minute and Carter scored the Cardinals’ second goal in the 24th minute.

Brooke Donnelly (Sandpoint) and McKenzie Favero also scored unassisted goals for North Idaho (3-0). Megan Wells (Central Valley) rounded out the scoring on a Carter assist.

Bailey Marlow scored the lone goal for Columbia Basin (0-1), which was outshot 22-5.
